Thanks to Fabrizio for the lesson summary!
The lesson on 19th October, in Meditteraneo classroom 1.4, by Teacher Bowett regarded the difference between the formal forms and informal forms of English.
Some audios were heard during the lesson to comprehend better the difference between formal and informal.
The first three audios dealt with the political and economic aspect of Brexit and, in one audio, it was possible to hear Theresa may's voice, she is the prime minister of the United Kingdom (UK).
In of the fourth audio, on the other hand, there was a discussion between a mother and daughter about being migrants in the UK.
It’s important to see how different language is used in different situations. In the first and fourth audio informal language was used and in the second and third the language was more formal. The third audio was a real informal conversation; it had pauses and laughing, and used some idiomatic expressions.
The difference between the formal and informal languages is called register.
Differences in register can be seen in specific areas of language, for example, in technical language, academic language, mathematical language, scientific language etc.
