Dear teacher,

I have a question about the use of the verb 'have'. When I form the past perfect of 'have' is it better to say had had or simply had? Is it redundant?

In riposta a antonella de sena

Hi Antonella,

PAST PERFECT form of 'have' = HAD HAD

Example:

When my sister got home, we HAD already HAD dinner.

Or...example with third conditional:

If I HAD HAD (or 'If I'd had') more time, I would have written a better essay.

Is that clear?
