VERB PATTERNS EXERCISE

Hi teacher!
I have done my verb patterns exercises. Sorry if I'm a bit late. I'm trying to make up all the activities.
I have got some questions if you don't mind.
What about these verbs?
1) What's the difference between suggest + gerund and suggest + that clause?
2) The verb need can be followed by the -ing form? When?
3) What about finish? Does it share the same pattern of start
Thank you so much!
I hope you are safe and sound. Take care!

Dear Consiglia,
Thanks for sending your work. I'll be catching up with FORUM work over the next few days and getting back to everyone. I haven't looked at your attachment yet, but I wanted to reply now to your questions.
SUGGEST:
"You should visit Paris in spring," Tom said to us.
Let's rewrite this sentence.
We can say: Tom suggested VISITING Paris in the spring.
We can use the gerund, as you say, and this is correct.
HOWEVER, if we want to make it clear that Tom made this suggestion TO US then we need to use a clause:
Tom suggested (that) we visit Paris in the spring.
Is that clear?
NEED
NEED is usually followed by an infinitive with 'TO':
I need to do my homework.
Do we need to study unit 9?
NEED + '-ing' form can be used with the same meaning as a passive infinitive:
That carpet needs cleaning again (meaning - it needs to be cleaned)
FINISH:
Followed by '-ing' form
I've finished STUDYING unit 8.
Whereas START can be followed by infinitive with TO or the '-ing' form and there is no difference in meaning:
I started studying at 8 o'clock / I started to study at 8 o'clock.
I hope this is all clear.
Stay safe,
Claire
